Year 4 Remote Learning – The digestive system 14.1.21
We are over a week into our remote learning for some children and Year 4 are showing what resilient and resourceful learners they can be! This term’s topic -Burps, Bottoms and Bile! – has got off to a rather gruesome start looking at the digestive system.
Here are some of the things they children have produced to show they learning.
Today, Year 5 have been investigating the samples they found from Alchemy Island earlier in the week.
They have: separated solid materials by sieving; cleaned different samples of water by using sieves, filters and evaporation and condensation; investigated different materials for electrical and heat conductivity, hardness, transparency and magnetism.
Monday morning maths for Year 5 was experimenting with place value to be able to partition numbers. They were using part-whole model, place value charts and counters and dienes to really show they understood how numbers can be partitioned in different ways.
To mark the start of the Year 5 learning journey ‘Off with her head!’, the Year 5s sampled different Tudor foods this afternoon.
They watched a video of what life would have been like in King Henry VIII’s kitchen and listened to Tudor music as they were served many delicacies such as: spiced and sugared meat, eggs in mustard sauce, jumbles (boiled and baked biscuits) and stale bread!
They also compared the benefits of water from a stream or alcoholic drinks such as cider, mead or beer. They were very surprised to hear that children drank them as well!
Oak Class have once again been busy at home this week with a variety of activities. These are some of the things they have been up to.
Working on the allotment, planting seeds and having a few bug hunts.
Tongue Twister Poems from Hope.
More First Aid courses completed.
Posters to show how iron was made.
Investigations into magnets, information leaflets about the Iron Age and a beautifully coloured poster of the ‘stay at home’ pigs!
Well done Oak Class, Miss Souter and Mrs Davie are really enjoying seeing all of your pictures so keep them coming in!
TTRS are holding an event to set a Guinness World Record for the highest score on TTRS in one minute.
They would like you to film yourself completing a 1 min game in the studio and then sending it to them. The highest score will be the Guinness World Record holder!
This link takes you to the website to explain how you can enter. The closing date is 4th June so you don’t have long.

This week has been amazing on TTRS! I have never seen such high scores. Fir class have smashed it out of the park with a whopping 7, 981 correct answers!!!!! They are most definitely the reigning Hazeldown Champions.
Here are this week’s results:
Next week the battles have been arranged based on where you came in the school overall this week. So Fir scored the most with Bonsai second so they are battling each other next week.
The battles look like this:
Battles begin at 8:50am on Monday and will end on Friday at 3:15pm. Let’s see if anyone can beat Fir!
Last week’s TTRS results are as follows:
Congratulations to the winning classes: Monkey Puzzle, Ebony, Apple, Palm and Fir.
To organise battles this week, I have ranked the classes based on the points scored last week. So Apple scored the highest amount closely followed by Fir so they are battling each other this week.
This is how the battles look:
The year 3 children who have been in school today have been tackling their SOLE work for Tribal Tales by doing some weaving. It was a little fiddly but with a little resilience they all got it finished.
We still have a few children in school and today with the return of the sunny weather, they were keen to make the most of the field. This afternoon, we had a carousel of PE activities set up on the field to practise a range of skills. It was really nice to make the most of the weather, the fresh air and the space after a rainy day yesterday.
Here are the Battles that have been randomly picked out of the hat by some of the older children in school. Battles end on Friday at 3:15pm!
Here are this week’s results. Well done to Oak for being the top scoring class this week. Congratulations to Cherry Y3 for their victory over Monkey Puzzle. It was a close race between Bonsai Y5 and Ebony Y6 with Ebony finally winning. Apple Y2 did an amazing amount this week! Well done to Redwood Y4 who were victorious over Holly Y6.
Next week’s battles will be drawn at random, so log on on Monday morning to find out who you will be battling.
This week’s Battles have finished with he following results:
Holly 1096 v 628 Ebony
Bonsai 762 v 499 Monkey Puzzle
Fir 2305 v 1811 Redwood
Oak 4487 v 512 Cherry
Apple 723 v 354 Palm
Congratulations to the winning classes. Just to change things up a little next week, the KS2 battles will be between a class and their nearest competitor.
Next week’s battles will be between:
Oak (Y3) v Fir (Y4)
Holly (Y6) v Redwood (Y4)
Bonsai (Y5) v Ebony (Y6)
Monkey Puzzle (Y5) v Cherry (Y3)
Apple V Palm
Battles start at 8:50am on Monday!!
Oak Class have been working incredibly hard this week on their new topic Tribal Tale. Here are just a few of the amazing things they have created whilst learning about the Stone Age through to the Iron Age:
Lots of cave paintings and hill forts have been created. Some of you have even had a go at making Stone Age tools!!
Literacy skills have been improved by looking for key features in an information text and then put to good use when writing their own.
In maths, we have been learning about measurement and lots have children have been dusting-off the tape measures and finding out the height and length of lots of things around the house. Barney measured all of his family to find out who was the tallest!
Fantastic learning Oak Class! Miss Souter and Mrs Davie really enjoy seeing pictures of all the wonderful things you are doing so keep sending them to us and we’ll put as many as we can on here so you can see what everybody is up to.

Year 3 had an afternoon of musical appreciation this afternoon as they immersed themselves in different classical scores created to depict various film villains. First, the children moved their bodies to the music and discussed how it made them feel. Then, the children used different symbols to represent dynamics, tempo, timbre, duration and pitch creating their own graphic scores. They listened to: The Imperial March from Star Wars; Miss Gulch’s theme music from the Wizard of Oz and Voldemort’s theme tune from Harry Potter.
Today, Year 3 have begun their new topic, Heroes and Villains, by pretending to be villains and trying to send secret messages using codes. First, they learnt how to use a code wheel. Then they made different invisible inks one from lemon juice and the other from bicarbonate and soda.

You are working in groups to create an interactive layer text about the Winter Festivals of 3 world religions. This week for home learning we would like you to do some research for one of your information pages. Discuss with your group which pages you still need to find information for and then pick a different page each. Remember, research is notes about a topic it needs to be in your own words. It will then be typed into your interactive layer text.
