27.11.20 – Year 4 Home learning – Due in MONDAY 14th Monday

Please note: This home learning is due in on Monday 14th December

Over the past 3 weeks, the children have been learning about Roman Myths. The children have immersed themselves in the story of Romulus and Remus.

Today the children put all their learning into their final Big Write.

Today, during PE, the children in Year 4 became Romans.

The children were split in half with one side becoming the Celts and the other half becoming Romans. The children participated in a game of ‘Capture the Flag’, where they had to think about the ways to attack the opposition. The children really enjoyed the games and came up with some great tactics to lure the opposition away from their flags they were protecting.

Today the children of Fir class had a go at weaving using a cardboard loom. The children worked really hard and were able to use different coloured wool to create different patterns.

If you want to have a go yourself, use this video to help you:

Today the children of Year 4 had the opportunity to explore the electronic equipment we have in school. The children made series circuits and were able to explore what happened with more bulbs, batteries and what happened when they included a push switch.

The children also had to problem solve and find any errors they had made if they circuit didn’t work. During this time, the children had to show great resilience.

Over the past 2 weeks, the children have been working extremely hard at home on their 15-point challenges.

Many children chose to make their own totem pole and have spent lots of time working on them at home. We have seen many different materials used, with some carving wood, using mod roc and intricately painting their designs.

Here are a few examples:

This afternoon, the children of Fir Class got a chance to head out to Forest School and have a go at setting trails using the land around them.

The children were very imaginative using sticks, stones, mushed berries and even charcoal to set trails around the woodland area.

Using what they learnt today the children have gained a better understanding of how the Iroquois would have moved around and signalled to each other during their time.

Over the past 3 weeks, the children of Fir Class have been taking part in music lessons with Mrs Price. They have been learning how to play Doods, which are like clarinets.

They are super excited every week and really enjoy learning a new instrument.

Today the children in Year 4, have been learning about ISPACE openers and how they can be used to up-level sentences.

As a school, we have been using ISPACE for the last few years and the children are becoming experts in including them in their sentences.

The children of Year 4 started their new topic: Road Trip USA!

For this they took part in some orienteering, where they have to find corresponding state names with the initials on their sheet.

The children showed great collaboration and resilience in completing the challenge.

After yesterday’s trip to the pond, the children of Willow class were keen to see what else the forest school area had to offer.

Today they went on a bug hunt. They searched all the nooks and crannies for all sorts of creepy – crawlies. They were very proud of what they found and here are a few pictures. Can you work out what they found from the pictures?

During the lockdown period, Brooke in Redwood has really thought about how she can work towards her North Star.

Her North Star is to be a fashion designer and with the help of a local seamstress she has been able to gain valuable skills and start her journey! Here she is with he skirt and top she has made.

Well done Brooke! Keep it up!

Today, the children in Willow Class went pond dipping at our fabulous school pond. The children got to see some fantastic creatures like tadpoles, froglets, frogs and newts.

The children were very excited that we may have lots and lots of frogs to see very soon!

This afternoon during SOLE, the children got a chance to experience some schooling from the Victorian Era. The children have been learning that in the Victorian times they did the 3 R’s – Reading, Writing and Arithmetic.

The children had a go at practicing their handwriting with chalk, chanting their timetables and reading aloud in front of the class. The children really enjoyed the lessons, but found it tricky to write neatly in chalk!

This week the children have really enjoyed themselves back at school. As one of the extra SOLE tasks set by Mrs Simister, the children have put together a video to show what they get up to.

At school the children enjoyed the fabulous weather yesterday and took part in the some of the challenges from the PE activity this week.

As part of the Devon Virtual Games they did the shuttle run, standing long jump and speed bounce.

The children really enjoyed it and pushed themselves in each of the events. How are you getting on at home? Can you beat 38.95 seconds (which was the quickest in our class)?

Over the lockdown period, Ezme in Redwood class has been super busy raising money for the NHS. Each day she has been out selling her homemade cards and has raised a whopping £511.

This is a fantastic achievement and is she super proud to have raised so much money for such an amazing cause at this time.

Well done Ezme! You are a SUPERSTAR!

What a final week before half term! The children of Redwood class have been working hard as always and and been challenging themselves with the maths and literacy.

The children had to write their final diary entries from the Battle of Hastings and you can see some examples in the pictures below. The children have continued to develop their life skills with more baking and cooking, as well as some of the children learning how to make and fix things.

Well done everyone! Have a great half term.

This week the children have been doing some super learning at home. They have continued to impress with their maths and literacy, but we are now seeing the children challenge themselves at different activities. This week we have seen some children helping their parents with DIY, making breakfast for their family and even help take care of a horse.

The children of Redwood are continuing to work really hard at home. This week we have had children practice gymnastics in their living rooms, bake cakes for people’s birthdays and trying out some DIY.

As well as this, the children have been challenging themselves with their learning. They have started a diary writing topic in literacy about the Battle of Hastings and are looking at shapes and angles in Maths. Below are some examples of the tremendous work they have been doing.

This week at school, the children in foundation have been learning about the life cycle of a frog. They have been out pond dipping, making videos and doing lots of arts and crafts.

As well as this they ave been taking part in Joe Wicks workouts in the hall!

Here are some pictures of the work they have done.

Wow, what a week it has been for Redwood class. The children have been super busy and have been proud to show off all the things that they have done. We have had a children run 5km for Charity, baking cookies, writing songs, camping out over night for Cub badges as well as completing the online learning like sewing, Harold Godwinson fact files and map drawing.

Well done everyone! Keep it up!

The children of Redwood class have been super busy over the past week and as well as focusing on their Maths and Literacy, they have been getting stuck in to learning about 1066 and the Norman invasion.

Also a lot of the children have been baking, exercising and exploring the local area. Here are a few examples:

To kick off World Book Day month, Mr Ludford came into Redwood class to share some of his favourite story – The Twits, by Roald Dahl.

The children loved hearing Mr Ludford read and are looking forward to Mr Hardee and Mr Goodenough coming into class to share theirs as well.

Today the children started the new half term with a hook morning into their new topic – Burps, Bottoms and Bile.

The topic looks at the digestive system and how food travels down it. The first part of the digestive system is in the mouth, where the teeth start to tear, grind and chew the food before it heads down to our stomachs.

Throughout the morning, the children learnt how to brush their teeth effectively and even got to have a go themselves.

They learnt that:

  • You need to brush for at least 2 minutes twice a day
  • You brush in a circular motion on the outside, top and inside of your teeth
  • Use a fluoride toothpaste

Today the children of Year 4 got to present all their learning to their parents in the form of a living Museum. Dressed in their finest Roman outfits the children showcased jewellery making, mosaic making, their knowledge about the gladiators and facts they have learnt along the learning journey.

The children loved sharing their learning and it was great to see so many parents attending the event. Thanks to everyone that came!

The children have been learning about the Romans and today got to design and make their own coins out of clay.

The children studied ancient coins and thought about their own designs. They inscribed Roman numerals and images of the Roman emperors into the clay.

They all had a fantastic time and thoroughly enjoyed their time at school when everyone else had gone home. A highlight was eating the pizzas and then going on a walk around the school in their pyjamas.

Today the children of Apple class had the chance to plant their own seeds. The children planted broad beans and cress and placed then on the window sill to see what they will turn into. The children used soil or saturated paper towel to help their seeds grow.

Watch this space for updates on how the seeds are doing!

Today the children of Year 2 took part in the Football Challenge as part of the SoccerAid challenge in Sports Week. The children had to dribble in and out of cones, go through two gates and then score a penalty into the goal.
