The Full Governing Body (“FGB”) meets once each half term (with an additional house-keeping meeting at the start of the Autumn Term to deal with administrative and planning matters for the forthcoming School year). The agenda is determined by the annual cycle of business and reports from portfolio holders and outcomes from the School Improvement Committee. The School Improvement Committee is scheduled to meet each half-term, usually two weeks before the full Board meeting. There are additional data meetings scheduled throughout the year where the governors meet with the school leadership team and subject leaders to scrutinise attainment and progress across the school
All Governors are allocated to specific ‘portfolio’ responsibilities, usually aligned to their skills and experience, which require them to make regular visits to the School to sample practice, ask questions, evaluate evidence and identify next steps of school improvement. These regular and focused visits enable Governors to work with the school leadership team to monitor standards and progress. Terms of Reference:
The School Improvement Committee Terms of Reference contain five individual sections as follows:
- School Improvement
- Community and Parent Links
- Vulnerable Pupils (SEND and Pupil Premium)
The Governing Body has identified four portfolios which operate in a similar manner to a Sub-Committee:
There are two further portfolios which have been set up to deal with specific aspects of staff performance and pay.
Governors are also involved in the recruitment and appointment of staff and in OFSTED inspection visits and also attend Parents’ Evenings.
In order to ensure continued growth and good Governor oversight, there is a section of the School Improvement Plan which addresses Governance specifically. This is reviewed in conjunction with the rest of the Plan at each meeting of the Full Governing Body. The Governing Body’s in-year objectives are contained within this section of the Plan.
