Spelling rules

When to double a consonant before adding -ed and -ing to a verb
We double the final letter when a one-syllable verb ends in consonant + vowel + consonant.*   stop, rob, sit

If the vowel is a short sound but more than one consonant then just add ing eg  back, jump, lift

If the word end in e then drop the e and add – ing or –ed eg like

  1. rob robbed      robbing
  2. fit fitted       fitting
  3. back backed      backing
  4. jump jumped     jumping
  5. like liked         liking
  6. joke joked        joking
  7. hope hoped        hoping
  8. bicycle
  9. difficult
  10. guard
