Gymnastics, Oak, 2.11.20
Today, we were lucky enough to have Mrs Moye join us for gymnastics. She is a qualified coach and she really got us working our tummy muscles. She helped us warm up our bodies and stretch our muscles before creating some balances and movements.
We were very lucky in Bonsai today as we had Mr Milson from TCS visit. We learnt a lot about how to perform rolls safely and how to perfect them like a gymnast. We also had a go at counter balances and counter tension moves. At the end, we were very lucky and got to go on the apparatus. We have a lot of fun and can’t wait for next week!
This week, Bonsai have started gymnastics in PE. We have begun by exploring different shapes and movements to create sequences.
Take a look at our Year 5 Gymnasts! Well done girls.
Year 5, during the first half of the Autumn term, have been learning gymnastic skills and how to produce a routine. They were focusing on counter balance and counter tension. In pairs, they applied these skills by making their own short gymnastics sequence which they performed to the rest of the class.
Yesterday, the year 6 classes began their gymnastics unit of work in physical education. The children collaborated to choreograph sequences including balances and rolls. We discussed the importance of working on core strength as it can help in many other sports and activities.
What a fantastic day of sporting activities and competitions!
In addition to ‘Team Extreme’ running scooter workshops and key stage one enjoying learning a Paralympic sport (boccia), key stage two took part in a gymnastic competition led by a gymnastic specialist: Catherine Kilburne. We were also fortunate enough to have 4 expert gymnasts from Exmouth college who helped judge the competition.
The standard was excellent and the children behaved impeccably.
All the teams’ points will be added to the overall total which will include the athletics and swimming. Look out for the results on Monday!
Children who have been taking part in Mr Hardee’s gymnastic club were selected to represent the school in a competition against the other schools in the learning community at TCS.
The 11 children selected from Years 5 and 6 all had to learn a floor routine including forward rolls, cartwheels and arabesques. Furthermore, they had to perform a vault. All children were judged and their scores went towards their team’s total score.
After showing great sportsmanship throughout the competition the children finished in 3rd and 4th place, missing out on the regional finals by 0.2 of a point.
Well done to all involved.
Congratulations to our year 4 gymnasts who came second in the regional finals for gymnastics.
After winning the competition in our local community, the team progressed to the finals which took place at Somersaults Gymnastic club, Kingsteignton.
Competing against champions and runners up from other districts, the standard of the competition was exceptional. Therefore it really is an outstanding achievement to finish second overall.
One of our gymnastic teams, out of the 4 who entered, won the competition last week! They will now compete in the finals next Wednesday against the champions of all the other local districts. This will take place at Somersaults Gym in Kingsteignton
Our other teams also did very well finishing 3rd, 4th and 5th!
Keep your eye out for the blog about the finals next week!

It was mentioned by the organisers of the competition that the children were impeccably behaved setting a super example! Mr Hardee is extremely proud of them.
We we find out the results tomorrow so look out for the blog!
Monkey Puzzle was very fortunate to be invited to the local sports learning community, gymnastics festival held at TCS. Children from all the schools with our local community were present and an afternoon of different gymnastic activities were enjoyed by everyone.
Our learning values of collaboration, relationships and risk taking were clearly evident all afternoon and our children were a credit to the school.
It was also great to see some familiar faces to Hazeldown School in Max Wheeler and Luke Belfield, who left us last year to join Year 7 at TCS. We were very lucky to have their expertise in guiding us through activities and to see them now representing their school as sporting ambassadors.
