A very busy week in Year 6
We have been working hard in Year 6 this week. Not only have we introduced some new skills (in PE and Computing), we have also been embedding some already known skills.
In P.E., we have been using netball as our focus game. This week we were trying to attract the attention of our team mates – without alerting the opposite time. This can be quite tricky! We were also reinforcing our passing skills – using the chest pass and bounce pass.
In Computing, we have been using data from the voyage of the Beagle to create line graphs. These line graphs showed the distance of the Beagle from its home port.
We have also been applying our literacy skill in our SOLE sessions. We had a may to create a poem about the Galapagos. Here are two examples:
Finally, in Science, we have been studying evolution and adaptation. One part of this involved looking at how a specific animal had adapted over time. One of our favourite activities was our beak investigation. Inspired by Charles Darwin’s research on Chaffinches, we experimented with different tools and seeds to see which worked best.
I hope you enjoyed looking at some of what we have done this week.
Today Oak Class were set a challenge from a visitor to school.
They had to use their map skills, work as a team and find pictures of animals hidden around the school grounds. The first letter of each animal when rearranged spelt out a word.
How did your team do? Which learning values did you use?
Today, we were lucky enough to have Mrs Moye join us for gymnastics. She is a qualified coach and she really got us working our tummy muscles. She helped us warm up our bodies and stretch our muscles before creating some balances and movements.
In Year 3, we have been learning dance. We have been learning our dance moves based on our topic Heroes and Villains. We have learned about gesturing, travelling, turning, jumping and stillness. Can you see any of these things in the photos below? Next week we are going to be wearing our superhero costumes and learning a new section to our routine.
Here is a glimpse into what the group with Mrs Jeffery has been up to over the last week.
We worked on our collaboration skills. Some of us made musical instruments whilst other choreographed a dance and sang to accompany the musicians. Later we performed it.
Some of us took a closer look at predators. Some children created their ultimate predator by combing more than one.
We also spent some time building time machines. Later we used the chrome books to label the different parts and write about where we would go and why.
We all loved singing a song about the continents. we sang this over and over and over. We will never forget it now and neither will Mrs Jeffery. Later, we made power points about the different continents, drew our own muddled up maps and found different creatures that live on each continent.
We have also enjoyed playing ladders in P.E.
In P.E we have been learning to move like animals and making sure we put weight on our hands to build up the muscles in our arms.
Today we got to travel like an animal along the equipment.
How does your body feel after exercising?
We had great fun today as we bounced around today. We also showed some great risk taking as we tackled the death slide and jumped off a platform on to an air bag.
It was wonderful to see the children supporting and encouraging each other. They had wonderful manners and did Hazeldown proud. iBounce said we were wonderful and asked if we could come back! Of course we want to. It was brilliant.
How did your body change after exercising?
What risks did you take today?
Did you bounce like any animals?
Year Two have been woking on creating different balances in P.E and today we got to try them out on the equipment. How many 2 point balances can you create?
In Year 4 (Fir and Redwood), we have been starting to work on our Dragon Dance inspired by our China topic.
Last week we had developed our movements by imitating the different animals in the Chinese Zodiac.
This week we focused mainly on the Dragon. In fours we thought of different ways to move around our space, whilst looking as dragon-like as possible.
Thank you Miss Tapp for organising these events for us today. We had great fun.
Today we enjoyed learning how to play hockey and learnt how to dribble the ball, whilst controling the hockey stick.
Today we used the skills we have learnt from our underarm and over arm throwing, rolling to complete a variety of activities. We also had to practise skipping to keep our heart working hard.
We were very pleased to see all the resilience that went on. Lots of children kept trying even if 5hey found it hard to start with.
Today Year 1 looked at different ways of travelling. We learned how to move like a bunny, a frog and a bear. We learned how important it is to move around on our hands to build muscle strength and that all our moves need to be neat and tidy. Can you remember how to do a bunny hop? How did you help your friend get better?
