Foundation – Common Exception Words – 1.4.22
Today we have been learning to spell some of our ‘Common Exception’ words. We Looked at how some of the words rhyme and discussed why they rhyme. We noticed that they all have the same ending. We also know that the exception in these words is that the letter e is making the /ee/ phoneme. Look at our fantastic rainbow word writing. Our Growth Mindset was evident in the progress we made as we worked. We always monitor our work to see where we can improve. We know that mistakes are our friends and if we make a mistake, we just try again. 🙂 We also demonstrated our eagerness to learn by practising other words which we know we need to work on.
We worked on the fine muscles in our fingers by cutting out Common Exception word pictures to take home.
Can you think of any other Common Exception words which rhyme?
As part of our spelling today, Fir class created sentences about Remembrance Day which included words from the year 3/4 spelling list. We reflected on the sacrifices they made during the war and felt empathy for the lives lost and others who were/are impacted by war. We demonstrated our resourcefulness by using our spelling list to create the sentences. We then shared our sentences with the class.
This week in Holly Class, we have been practising our personalised spellings. We used the metacognition cycle to plan how we were going to do this, then we monitored throughout the lesson. Finally, we evaluated at the end to see if our strategy was effective, or if we need to use a different strategy next time. Here are some of the excellent strategies the pupils used.
Today, we had a class competition based on year 3/4 spelling words. We worked collaboratively to choose the correct spelling from multiple choice questions. We needed to be speedy and accurate to hatch our monsters. We loved this so much, we played 4 rounds before going home. We can’t wait to play this again soon!
Year 3 have been exploring homophones today. Our main focus was understanding which ‘to’, ‘two’, ‘too’ and ‘there’, ‘they’re’, ‘their’ to use. We even recapped some of the previous homophones we have looked at. We marched, clapped and tapped our heads to spell the correct homophone for the sentence. We had a lot of fun doing this and we can’t wait to learn more about homophones.
We have been having fun with spelling in Year Three.
Have a look at the table below and the photos of us. Can you find and object and say what the rules for that object is if it becomes plural?
Welcome to our new class – Hobeny (A cominbation of Holly and Ebony).
We have had a very busy week this week. We have started following the new lockdown approach and been working very hard.
In our SPaG session we found a new method for trying to rememeber tricky words. This is called the ‘naughty letters’ method. In this method, you write the word out but make the letters that catch you out look different. In my example, some people find spelling the word ‘necessary’ tricky as it can be hard to recall which letters are doubled.
We also looked at simple mnemonics that can help us. For the same word, we learnt the mnemonic ‘one collar and two sleeves’.
Some of the children have been demonstrating their technology skills in SOLE. One of our MUSTS was to present some information about Charles Darwin. some children chose to create a website, whilst others created short video presentations.
We hope you enjoy our work.
In Holly Class, we have been working really hard on our spellings. At the beginning of the term, we were tested on our year 5/6 spelling words which created our own personalised spelling list. We then used a range of strategies to practise our personal spellings. This week, we have tested on these spellings again. We used metacognition (thinking about thinking) to reflect on and evaluate the strategies that helped us, or didn’t help us, to make progress.
Here are a couple of examples of the progress made:
This week in Ebony, we have been talking about metacognition.
Part of this has been during our spelling sessions. At the start of the term, we were tested on the first half of our Year 6 spelling list. Then, over the course of the term, we used a ranged a strategies to learn those spellings we did not get correct. This week, we were tested on the same words again. We then compared our results to the results from the start of term.
Most of us had improved, but some had not (or only improved a small amount).
This whole process involved metacognition (or thinking about learning).
To start with we identified areas we needed to improve, then we planned our approach by choosing a strategy that we thought would work and finally we evaluated our approach by seeing how much we had improved.
When we work on the second half of the Year 6 spellings, we will need to look back at our approach and consider if we need to change it or keep it the same.
This morning Monkey Puzzle had fun testing each other on the ‘ly’ suffix that we have been focussing on this week. They played a super suffix board game which allowed them to practice the ‘ly’ words and if they made a mistake they had to write them out and miss a go. I think great fun was had by all. Fantastic collaboration skills were shown and the morning flew by…time flies when you’re having fun!
In Phonics today, we were looking at different ai sounds. We focused on ai, ay and the split a-e digraph. In pairs, we acted as sound detectives and circled the ai sounds in a story. Some of us even spotted other alternatives, such as eight, great and grey.
We noticed that ai usually comes in the middle of a word and ay usually comes at the end of a word.
We care about our spellings. Getting them right helps us to communicate. Have a look at some of the ways we can show that we are taking pride in our spellings. What can you do to improve your spellings?
We have been working collaboratively today as we have started to create word webs. To begin with, we made sure we could use a dictionary correctly by finding chosen words and their definitions. After this, we wrote a word in the middle of our paper, and then we found its definition. Next, we split the word into its prefix and root word and found out what they meant. Our next step will be to find other words containing our chosen prefix and root word.
Year 6 have been working hard on their spelling. We have used a spelling test that we did at the end of half term to focus on learning from our mistakes. There were lots of learning attitudes on show including collaboration, resilience and resourcefulness.
